From the onset of the menses to about age 17-18, periods tend to be less predictable. You are changing from the body of a girl to the body of a woman. The beginning of the hormone cycle is often irregular and you get jolts and dry spells of hormones in your system. This is confusing to your reproductive system and periods are erratic. Similarly, ovulation is erratic. That is one reason why teens are prone to pregnancy at any time - even during our periods.
In extreme cases, hormones are prescribed to regulate the period. Unless discomfort (REAL discomfort) is experienced, most doctors recommend that you allow your body to mature. For women with extreme cramps or possibly denilitating pms, hormones are prescribed. Do not coonfuse inconceniece with discomfort. I never had real discomfort but spent much of my teen aged years washing panties. Every pair I owned were stained. Carry a pad or tampon all the time, for your little surprises, and expect it to stabilize in a few years.
All women should have a gyn exam at 16 or before they become sexually active. That is a good time to discuss this with your doctor.
