OP: how long is your period on the pill?

Well i guess the name of my thread is an obvious question, but i had a question for all of you, as im curious.

I would like to know, of you who may be on the pill, who sooon after starting on you red pills (or non-hormonal pills) do you start you period.

I have been on the pill for only 2 months, and im trying to work out the deal will how mine will work. My period normally goes for 5 days and the first time it started on the 2nd day that i started my red tables(and it did indeed last for 5days) This time, i have just taken my 3rd pill...but still no period. is that anything to worry about?
I have taken it correctly for the last month, and me and my bf have used protection during sex. I did however take a couple of extra hormonal pills (yellow ones) to extend my cycle a couple of days. do you reckon that could effect it?

Anywho, if you can, let us know when you start your period and how long it goes for?

Replies:

Of course anytime you take any extra ones... it is going to make your cycle irregular. Especially since you've only been on them for 2 mths... your body is still getting adjusted.
I'll start my placebos on Sunday and usually wont get my period till wed sometime.... latest its been was like Thur morn.
It usually last till Sun or Mon...those days being light.

When you begin the placebo pills, it can start at anytime. When I was taking them it began generally within the first day of the placebo's but there were months when it was up to 5 days later. In general the pills did not change the duration of my cycle, it was always 4-5 days. Some months it was lighter and some it was not.

The extra pills you took should not change anything b/c when you switch to the placebo pills, you have stopped putting the hormones in your body and it causes you to bleed because you are withdrawing from the hormones.

Be careful, playing with the pills. If you are looking to decrease how frequently you have a period, there are specific BCP's which are intended to do just that.

oh the only reason i took extra pills was because i was wanting to have my period start on a monday and seeing as last time it started a day after i started taking the red ones, i thought perhaps it may this time, so i would need to start the red ones on a sunday....though obviously that hasn't worked. so that blew that plan outta the water.

I have spoken to people who dont have there period till a couple of days in. i just hate too much irregularity and always get worried over stupid little things. but i guesss this only being the second month ive been on the pill, its bound to happen

Give your body time to get used to it. If it's bothering you seriously discuss with your doctor switching pills to "Seasonale"; on this pill you get your period four times a year (every 3 months).

Read my sticky on this forum "Take Only As Directed." A major cause of contraceptive "failure" is women messing around trying to schedule themselves. Not going to happen. As Demon and Sera point out, it takes your body a while to adjust and you are messing with some serious physiological stuff here. Your doctor is usally at least as knowledgeable as the various "they" young women use for information.

Not all of us in the business are enthralled with Seasonale. Many women do not tolerate it well. Talk to your doctor if you consider it.

I switched my pills and at the same time moved the day that I start. So I take my first placebo on Friday around 11:50 pm, and I get my period on Monday and done by very very late friday.

Good for you, fury, but here we have a woman who is not yet adjusted to the new hormones in her body beginning to mess around with her scheduling.

Why can patients not just use drugs the way they were intended? Everyone is her own expert. There is good reason that birth control pills are not "over the counter."

i have a question that's somewhat related but also different to the topic... i'm on the pill (meliane). I'm taking them because i had endometriosis not for b/c purposes (althought that's an added bonus). Before I used to have extremely painful periods and they lasted a good full week with the last day or two being reasonably light.

my question is this... now i have the first 2 days with a moderate flow (i'd have to change every 3-4 hours). however after that i have a good 4-5 days where i get practically nothing. I would be fine with a panty liner for the whole day. What i'd like to know is this... firstly if this is normal? does anyone else have this kind of flow? secondly - this is what bothers me most - since it is so very little, I can't wear a tampon because it would never get 'full'. this means i'm stuck HAVING to wear normal pants with a panty liner which quite frankly sucks in the summer time because i can't even go to the beach or anything!!!

any help/suggestions??

It's not uncommon to have a very light flow while on the pill. The first day or two were killers for me, and the rest scant.

Try Tampax "Lite Juniors" or a menstrual cap.

You may consider a menstrual cup. There is one disposable called Instead. My g/f uses these and is quite satisfied. I have had less luck with them but I use a Diva menstrual cup. Formerly I used a Keeper. The Keeper is latex and lasted over seven years. The Diva is silicone and I do not know how long it will last. You can leave these in place for twelve hours. I have gone longer but do not like to. I have never had an accident with either the Keeper or the Diva. There is also Moon Cup - roughly the same but I have never had one.

Check their websites and even though they are expensive, in the long term they are cheaper.

Both the pill and endometriosis can cause the long tapred flow. That is quite normal.

Oh yeah, I agree. I was on the pill for 3 years before I did this with the help of a doctor. And normally would not have considered it, but I had to switch brands, and the doctor assured me that with me being on the pill for so long it would be safe. Plus, I always use backup method just in case. Better safe than sorry.

And sexy, don't worry about light periods. At times my periods were so light that if it wasn't for a couple of drops of pink on the pantyliner, I'd be running out to take a pregnancy test.
