OP: Femcon?

question, how long does she need to take the pill before it becomes effective? has this brand had any negative reviews? we are planning on using a condom as well since i do not care to risk her getting pregnant.

If you are using a condom in conjunction w/ the pill.. there really is no wait time.

For those who are wanting to use only the BC pill as their form of protection... the packaging will say sometimes as early as 7 days...but my DR, Brandye, Sera, and others suggest one complete pill pack/cycle. In that first month... you just use a back-up method. .. but since you guys are using both... you are already using a backup method.

As Demon points out, many doctors recommend one full cycle. I believe the brochure with Femcon says a week. The difference is simply that we doctors deal with women adjusting to these things and face reality more squarely than the marketers.

All oral (and other hormonal) contraception has negative reviews. Different women adjust to different pills different ways. One woman will be happy with a brand/formulation and another will be all messed up by it.

Femcon has a couple gimmicks: 1. It is flavored and chewable. I think this is just a gimmick. Read further and it says to follow with a full eight ounce drink to make sure it all goes down! Why not just swallow with a glass of water? Or beer? 2. It is iron added. If a woman needs an iron supplement, I give it to her but see no reason to add it to the contraception. Again, marketers ideas.

Femcon will have all the advantages and disadvantages of any "combination" pill. I find most women adjust to the combination pills quite well. We do not have Femcon in our NHS formulary mainly because it is rather expensive and other generic combination pills do the same thing.

There was one girl on here who posted who had this thing about taking pills. She literally said she couldn't swallow a pill..even those as tiny as a BCP. So this would work for her.

Yes, Bob, that is what I am saying. Among all the hormonal birth control systems there is a negligible difference in their effectiveness. Some women adjust to some better than others; some women prefer one mode of delivery over another - patch, pill, shot, straight oestrogen, combination, ring, whatever. They all work.

Those that advertise other "wonderful" things such as chewable, iron added, improve complexion, reduce number of periods are merely variations on the same basic theme. I prefer simple; if a patient requires iron or whatever, I'll prescribe that separately. Our NHS avoids the latest and biggest fad in pills and saves money. Additionally, everything added to the pill is one more thing to adjust to. Some people get diarrhea from iron sulfate and may blame it on the hormone.

Demon,

Maybe. It is chewable and flavored. I have no experience with them but the website recommends a full glass of water after chewing. Whether her hang-up on pills would extend to this, who knows?
