OP: Recurring Bacterial Vaginosis

Hi everyone. I have recurring bacterial vaginosis. Each time it is treated using Flagyl and then within a few weeks or months, it comes back. What could be causing this? I plan to see a gynecologist for this soon but would like some information on it first.

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance in the bacteria resident in the vagina. The vagina (an internal organ) is a little ecosystem made up of many different bacteria and fungi. In most of us, most of the time, they keep one another in check and we have a balanced ecosystem. Recurrent vaginosis indicates that there is some chemical or bacterial interaction knocking your system out of balance. We do not know the real cause of vaginosis. There are some risks that seem to be related. Douching is always a prime suspect because douching removes both good and bad bacteria and there is no real control on how they reestablish themselves. Regrettably, many women who notice the foul odor do exactly the wrong thing: they douche. Don't.

Radical changes in diet, new sex partners, many sex partners, homonal imbalance and inadequate hygiene are all related in some measure but we cannot pinpoint a specific cause. The doctor is in a difficult position because any treatment tried may have exactly the opposite effect after a short time.

If you have other infections (dental, frequent abcesses) these may be contributory. In the meantime, frequent external cleansing with mild soap is necessary. Three times a day and after each bowel movement. I recommend clear, liquid soap that is NOT anti-bacterial. Clear shampoo can be useful is not scented. This soap rinses easily and completely and lowers the risk of killing the bacteria you actually need.

Sorta off topic but hey Brandye, what is there to do about the...smell you get from a man cumming inside you other than washing up afterwards? I find when my partner and I have sex often I don't tend to smell as fresh, I just smell like him, which isn't a bad smell...but I prefer my scent on myself mostly. :p

Sweety, those wipes are fine if you can get a thorough cleansing with them. Also those with scents can cause a reaction in some women. I would still make certain to do a thorough washing morning and night.

Right, Curious. For several hours after men make their deposit in us, we drain a mixture of our vaginal juices and the semen that left behind. Exposed to air, most body fluids begin to putrefy. Even if we wash immediately, the drainage will continue and the next pee stop we can smell what we have done.

Semen has a very characteristic odor and this gets more so as it ages in the air. Some women report that they can taste semen a few hours after vaginal sex. The semen is absorbed through the vaginal walls and travels our bloodstreams. Hence, the taste passing through the mucousa of the mouth. We even sweat semen while it is in our veins.

Wow. I didn't know that about the semen thing. Also, would it be best to get the unscented wipes since the scented ones can cause a bad reaction?
