If you use the patch EXACTLY as directed, you are protected full time whether it is on you or not. All forms of hormonal birth control (pill, patch, ring, shot) have about the same effectiveness. If 100 sexually active women use one of these forms exclusive but correctly for one year, three will become pregnant.
Be careful of high fevers, anti-biotics and many dietary supplements. These can all render the patch, or others, ineffective. In that case, use an alternative form or protection for one complete cycle after the medication. Tell any doctor prescribing that you are on the patch and ask your prescriber or pharmacist (chemist here in UK) about any supplements you wish to take.
