OP: patch + sex on period ?

I tried to see if this had been asked before and didn't see anything, if there is a topic about this already please feel free to point me in that direction.

I've been on the patch, ortho evra, for about 6 months. when I'm on my off week and I'm on my period, is it necessary for my bf and I to use condoms if we have sex during that time? what about the time between when I take off the third patch and when my period starts? I ask because we do not use condoms normally (have both been tested and are free of stds, also we are monogamous). I know it's possible to get pregnant on your period but is that still feasible if you are on the patch?
thanks!

If you use the patch EXACTLY as directed, you are protected full time whether it is on you or not. All forms of hormonal birth control (pill, patch, ring, shot) have about the same effectiveness. If 100 sexually active women use one of these forms exclusive but correctly for one year, three will become pregnant.

Be careful of high fevers, anti-biotics and many dietary supplements. These can all render the patch, or others, ineffective. In that case, use an alternative form or protection for one complete cycle after the medication. Tell any doctor prescribing that you are on the patch and ask your prescriber or pharmacist (chemist here in UK) about any supplements you wish to take.
