OP: Amniocentesis

My wife is 15 weeks pregnant and she is scheduled to have an Amniocentesis performed on 12/4/08. She is very concerned about this procedure due to the rare, but possible chance of a miscarriage or infection. She turned 34 this past August and will be 34 at the time of delivery. She had a very bad delivery of her last child (she was 27 at the time) which was due to vaginal tearing and hemorraging during delivery. Because of this, our baby which is due in May 09 will be delivered by C-section. She is very concerned about her pregnancy and is worried that she is at a higher risk because of her previous delivery experience. This will be her 4th and last baby. Her first child (she was 20 at the time) was delivered prematurely at 27 weeks by C-section and her 2nd child (she was 22 at the time) was delivered naturally with no problems. All of the ultrasounds and blood/urine tests to this date haven't shown any problems or given us any reason for concern. She recently attended a class on Amnioncentesis at our hospital and they discussed the possible side effects. I love her dearly and I support her 100%. Because I have no children of my own (I'm going to be 33 next month) I'm so happy and can't wait for the birth of our child. Do you feel this is the best thing for her to do? We really want to know should their be any serious birth or chromosomal defects of our child. Their is no family history on either side of any abnormalities. We feel this is the best thing to do and we have faith that everything will turn out alright, but she still feels worried due her last delivery.

Here is my question to every woman or couple; if you have a defect are you willing to change the pregnancy [terminate it]? If the answer is a solid no I would not have it done. If one intends to term the pregnancy if it's incorrect, genetically, then do it. However, I see no risk if the original answer is NO.

Sera raises an important issue. Just as important is that no one other than you, your wife and the doctor has the information to make this decision. There was period several years ago that amnio was almost automatic. That has changed and it is done for specific purposes. What is really being accomplished? would be the question.

My suggestion is that she and the doctor have a long chat and make the decision.
