Pregnancy with diabetes
Ok, first off, my problem is that i am a notorious planner, must plan out everything. I am also constantly planning the next few years, next year, next 5 and so on and on. When planning for children i have come across a problem. My girlfriend is a diabetic. I have read that this would qualify her as a high risk pregnency, but when doing online searches, the only results i can seem to get are dealing with gestational diabetes which isn't what i need to find out about right now. Can anyone help me out with some specifics or point my to a site that could help me out? thx in advance.

High risk pregnancy means only that some extra care need be taken. To give you detail I would need more information than we should exchange here. She will be very careful with diet and glucose levels. In either direction, there is a risk to the fetus. Your wife to be will will have to have more frequent visits with the doctor and there will some exceptional monitoring right up to birth.
Years ago, the answer would have been to not get pregnant. Today, thee should be a thorough discussion with the doctor. The type and severity of the diabetes, patient history and stability of the condition, past compliance and real nutrition maintenance. In short, most diabetics can successfully become mothers with extra care, mostly on her part but with much support from the family.
WebMD has a new discussion or, at least, question group. Right now, you probably do not know what questions to ask. Follow that thread for a while and then the two of you raise the issues together. Do not start asking on the web before you do your homework. The local library and the literature available at your doctor's office is the place to start.
